As someone who is no doubt living and breathing the American dream, Martha was certainly a good candidate to answer the question. Forbes asked her this week, "What is the American Dream?"
A couple of hundred years ago, writer Samuel Johnson so wisely said: “To be happy at home is the ultimate result of all ambition.” Though Johnson was himself an Englishman, the statement is, to my mind, at the heart of the American Dream. I have worked hard all my life and I take great pride and pleasure in the business I created and the success I have been so fortunate to enjoy. But there is nothing I treasure more than time spent at home with my friends, family members and pets.
I know I’m not alone in this sentiment. Our families and our homes are the center of American life. And everything we do is to make those homes--and the lives in them--more beautiful, more comfortable, more functional and more full of life and light and joy for those we love. At the end of the day, that is the American Dream. All the rest is window dressing.
