Summery Sandals
The summer weather is definitely here in California, so I was excited to break out my customized Dr. Scholl's this weekend!
I painted them last summer after watching this segment on "Martha." They were really easy to make and I get lots of compliments on them. Plus, they're super-comfortable.
I had a hard time finding the plain Dr. Scholl's in any local stores, so I ended up ordering them online here.
If anyone else has made these, I'd love to hear what color combos/patterns you came up with!

Inside a Black Apple

Who caught The Martha Stewart Show yesterday? If you missed it, you need to watch This Video to catch Emily Martin, crafter/artist extraordinaire, create some of the most adorable dolls ever to grace the Martha Stewart Show.
Emily who is widely known among the etsy crowd for her quirky paintings, prints, and paperie type goods can also be found at her blog, Inside a Black Apple. And those interested more in clothes than crafts should check out her "fashion-y blog" Some Girls Wander.
Let's just say I have been completely inspired by her creativity - and her wardrobe - I'm such a wanna-be. : ) In fact, in my studio sits two of her prints, Mysterious Genevieve & Mon petit Amelie, watching over me as I work.

Cute Up Your Office
Yes, I'll admit it...I'm one of those people: I like everything around me to look cute. Whether it be the handwriting on a card or my grocery list, I want it to be pinch-those-cheeks adorable. So a couple of weeks ago on The Martha Stewart Show when they made little notebooks out of scrap paper from their offices I thought , "Perfect! Now even the scribble-y notes to myself can be cutsy!"
Here's a quick Pictorial on how I made my "Scrap Book."
(Scroll over the photos for quick instructions or View full video instructions here: "My Commitment.Org")
Supplies (for two books):
25 sheets of scrap paper with one side blank (I got mine from the scrap paper pile at work, too)
Paper cutter (or very steady hands to cut with scissors)
Card Stock (2 sheets)
2 Large Paper Clips
Ruler
Stapler (that can staple through 30 sheets or more of paper)
Double Stick Tape
Pretty Scrapbook paper
Bone Scorer
Here's one hint that I wished I'd had on this first book: when they cut the scrapbooking paper for the cover, they talk about cutting it a little shorter than the 8 1/2 inches (down from the 12x12 sheet)...but really you need to cut it a little longer. That way you'll have some overlapping at the end that you can trim to match the page size perfectly.
Cereal Box Organizer...
Supplies:
Old cereal box
Scissors
Wrapping Paper
(the original project called for painting the pencil, but I was out of paint so I improvised.)
Supplies:
Pencils
Tape
Glue
Wrapping Paper
What are some of your favorite office crafts from Martha?

The Martha Experience
A few months back, my friend Angel and I went to see a taping of the Martha Stewart Show. It was actually our second time going (the first was a year ago).
Have you ever been to a taping of Martha Stewart? It's quite a whirlwind experience. You arrive about an hour before the taping and pick up your tickets. You go through security (standard metal detector and bag search) and check your coats and anything else you want at the coat check (completely free). There are drinks and sweets laid out for the taking. It was delicious chocolate chip cookies this time.
While waiting, we were asked to sign forms that allow the show to use our images. This time, we were also asked to write down questions we'd like Martha to answer. I thought long and hard, but the first thought that came to mind was "Does she wear sweatpants?" I think it was because I had recently seen an episode of Oprah where she showed her favorite loungewear. Anyway, I wrote something to that effect down and the woman checking the questions loved it and wanted me to be the first to ask a question during the Ask Martha segment.
Unfortunately, they ran out of time so that segment was axed, but we did get some awesome seats out of it (right up front, and the camera LOVED us - check out the whole show here, I am the brunette in the red).
The guest for the episode was Elisabeth Hasselback, whom Angel and I aren't really fans of, so that was a little disappointing. She and Martha made some very cute stenciled stools (check out here). They would be awesome for a child's playroom. However, it was the fussiest of fussy crafts. It requires you to cut out intricate patterns on three overlay stencils to create a very detailed (and adorable) animal picture. Then you have to stencil them one by one. Honestly, it's too much work (I think) for an ACTUAL parent.
There was no chef (darn!) but they did a tip segment with the staff chefs. We picked up some good tips like save your scraps in the freezer until you have enough to make a stock.
Want your own Martha experience? The show isn't currently ticketing, since they are going on hiatus soon (but have taped a lot of shows for first-run in the summer). However, this is the link to get tickets. They will be doling out more tickets for the fall.

This adorable animal night-light makes the perfect addition to any nursery.
Tools and Materials
Balloon
Medium bowl
Paper towel
Oil
Natural cheese-cloth
Scissors
8-inch-diameter round lampshade bottom wire
Fabric stiffener
Spray bottle
Decoupage gel
Colored tissue paper
Turtle template
Elephant template (coming soon)
Pin
Green card stock paper
Mat knife
Green tongue depressors
Black marker
Google eyes, optional
Bulb stand
7.5 watt bulb
Animal Night-Light How-To
1. Rest an air-filled balloon in a medium bowl to hold in place.
2. Using a paper towel, grease balloon surface with oil.
3. Using natural cheese-cloth, trim ends to make a large circle. Mold onto top half of balloon. Smooth out surface, to prevent bumps.
4. Place an 8-inch-diameter round bottom wire over balloon.
5. Spray natural cheese-cloth with fabric stiffener made from 1 part water and 1 part fabric stiffener.
6. Trim hanging excess cheese-cloth to even out length.
7. Fold excess cheese-cloth up and over wire to enclose it, and create a finished rim. Let dry 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
8. Using decoupage gel, coat cheese cloth.
9. Cover dome with triangle-cut tissue paper (for base color). Once tissue paper is in place, seal with decoupage gel.
10. Place precut segment on dome top. Use decoupage gel to adhere. Place second precut segment on top of first. Add more gel to seal segments in place. Repeat process for remaining segments.
11. If necessary, apply another coat of decoupage gel and allow to dry 30 minutes.
12. Poke hole in balloon to let it deflate slowly. Remove balloon.
13. Glue on seam binding.
14. Download and print turtle template; cut out shapes. Using green card stock paper, cut out shapes for head, feet, and tail.
15. Using a mat knife, cut green tongue depressors to 1 inch in length. Attach to paper using glue. Attach remaining foot to shade.
16. While flat, draw eyes using black marker or attach google eyes. Fold head to slight cone shape to add dimension. Attach to shade with glue.
17. Place shade over bulb stand with 7.5 watt bulb.
